Bonnie Parker
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker was born on October 1, 1910 in Rewena, Texas. She was the second of three children. When Bonnie was in high school, she met Roy Thornton and they dropped out of school and were married six days before her 16th birthday. The couple split three years later and never crossed paths again. They never divorced and Bonnie died still wearing her wedding ring. After the marriage ended, Bonnie went and lived with her mother and worked as a waitress. Clyde Barrow Clyde Barrow was born on March 24, 1909 into a farming family in Texas. He was the fifth of seven children Clyde grew up very poor and his family spent months living under their wagon until they had enough money to get a tent. Clyde's first arrest happened in 1926 after running when police questioned him over a rental car he never returned. The second arrest was for stolen goods. Clyde barrow cracked safes, stole cars, and robbed stores. He had sequential arrests in 1928 and 1929 and was sent to Eastham Prison Farm in April of 1930. Clyde's first killing occurred while he was in prison, when he used a lead pipe to crush the skull of another inmate, who had repeatably sexually assaulted Clyde. Clyde was not charged with the murder because another inmate took the blame. Clyde was paroled in February of 1932 and came out of prison a bitter and hardened criminal. The Meeting Bonnie and Clyde met in Texas in January of 1930 at a friend's home. When they met, they were both immediately smitten with each other. The Crimes Bonnie was arrested in Kaufman, Texas, after a failed robbery attempt, and jailed. Bonnie remained in jail for two months until the grand jury decided not to indict her. Soon after, she was reunited with Clyde and they were on the run together. In August of 1932, while Bonnie was away visiting her mother, Clyde and two other people were drinking at a country dance, which was illegal under Prohibition, and a Sheriff and his deputy, Eugene C. Moore, approached them in the parking lot. Clyde opened fire and killed the deputy. This was the first killing of a lawman and the total number would eventually amount to nine. Soon after, a store keeper was killed during a robbery. On Christmas day in 1932, W.D. Jones had joined the gang, and together him and Clyde killed Doyle Johnson while stealing his car. Two weeks later, Clyde killed Deputy Sheriff Malcom Davis. Bonnie helped Clyde escape from prison by bringing him a gun while visiting. The gang was noticed by local citizens in July of 1933. They became surrounded by local lawmen and they once again found themselves under fire. Clyde, Bonnie, and another member of the gang were all able to escape. Two others in the gang were captured. Both Bonnie and Clyde were shot once in the leg. Bonnie and Clyde moved from place to place and did not stay in any state for too long because they knew that police did not cross state lines and they used this to their advantage. On January 16, 1934, Clyde and his gang broke out five inmates including an estranged gang member. Before the raid occurred, a recently released inmate planted two guns within the prison. Two guards were injured in the shooting and escape, and another was murdered. The End On May 23, 1924, a posse that included police offers from Louisiana and Texas hid in bushes along a highway near Sailes, Louisiana. Bonnie and Clyde were ambushed by the police and killed. The posse had been tracking the couples movement and knew they would be on that road. The police shot a total of 130 rounds at the vehicle killing them almost instantly. At the time they were killed in 1934, they were believed to have committed 13 murders and several robberies and burglaries. Bonnie remained a loyal companion to Clyde throughout their relationship and through the crime spree. Bonnie and Clyde lived during the great depression which spurred a lot of the crime. The couple was later depicted in a successful 1967 filmed titled Bonnie and Clyde. |
